Beginner's Mistake out of the way....

Posted by Eric Johnson on May 23, 2010 at 4:47 PM

Well, I did that stupid thing....

I spent about 45 minute writing a blog post.    Quite a few words.  Longest one yet.

Several pages long.

Moderately clever.   Pretty well constructed, I thought.

(some of you probably know where this is going already)

I had an extended metaphor built up.  And a lead up to future blog posts.

Hundreds of carefully constructed words.

Then, I clicked publish.

and got sent to a page for me to log into my account.   My session had timed out.

Entered my name and password to log in.   And got a black blog post entry page....

Everything lost due to session timeout.  No way to recover using back button or anything.

I hadn't even hit  "save as draft" every so often...

I KNOW better than this.

Stupid, stupid beginner's mistake.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find the best way to kick myself repeatedly.

If you don't mind some advice from another blogger:

What I do is to use MS Word or OpenOffice Writer or something similar to actually compose the post (assuming it's a long one), and have that program do the autosaving. Then I copy/paste it into the blog editor after it's complete.

Also, if you were to use WordPress (my blog platform of choice) it performs automatic saves for you any time you're editing.

A third thing I often do is this: right BEFORE I hit the "Publish" button, I quick do a "Select All" then a "Copy" on the entire text of my post. Then, if the worst does happen, I can simply open a new window, hit "Paste", and I'm back with no effort lost.

Good luck!

If you don't mind some advice from another blogger:

Yeah, if I'm writing something long for a forum, I USUALLY compose in wordpad then cut and paste it in.

And when I'm entering something non-reproducible or long into a web-based form, I USUALLY select all and copy to clipboard before hitting save or whatever....

and, in fact, I thought of select and copy just right AFTER I hit publish this time.

I have no excuse, I should have done those things. I was just stupid today.

Appreciate the sharing of advice. Maybe it will help drill it into my thick skull. Or help someone else avoid my mistake....
